Discovering the Emerald of the Aegean: Skiathos

Skiathos, the most famous island of the Northern Sporades complex, is a paradise where lush pine forests meet the endless blue of the Aegean Sea. Despite its small size, it is world-renowned for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, its golden coastline with over 60 beaches, and its vibrant nightlife.

The Charming Skiathos Town (Chora)

The heart of the island beats in Skiathos Town. Built amphitheatrically around a sheltered bay, the town is a maze of narrow, whitewashed alleys decorated with colorful bougainvillea.

  • Bourtzi Fortress: A small, pine-covered peninsula that separates the port into two parts. It houses the ruins of a Venetian fortress built by the Gizi brothers in the 13th century and now serves as a cultural center and a perfect spot for a scenic walk.

  • The Papadiamantis House: The former residence of Alexandros Papadiamantis, one of Greece’s most influential writers. It is now a museum where visitors can see the modest life of the “saint of Greek literature.”

  • The Old Port: The ideal place for an evening stroll, lined with traditional wooden boats, stylish bars, and high-end restaurants.

Must-See Sights and Landmarks

Beyond the bustling town, Skiathos hides treasures of historical and religious significance.

  • The Medieval Castle (Kastro): Located on the northern tip of the island, this was the island’s capital during the Middle Ages. It was built on a massive rock to protect the inhabitants from pirate raids. Today, you can explore the ruins of houses, churches, and the old gate.

  • Evangelistria Monastery: Hidden in the mountains, this monastery played a crucial role during the Greek War of Independence. It is historically significant as the place where the first modern Greek flag (a white cross on a blue background) was designed and woven in 1807.

  • Monastery of Panagia Kounistra: The spiritual protector of the island, located in a pine-clad area. It is famous for its beautiful wood-carved iconostasis.

World-Class Beaches

Skiathos is primarily famous for its stunning waters. Here are the “celebrities” of the island:

  1. Koukounaries: Often voted as one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. It features fine golden sand and a rare pine forest that reaches the water’s edge, creating a unique ecosystem (Strofylia Lake).

  2. Lalaria: Accessible only by boat, this beach is iconic for its massive white cliffs and smooth white pebbles. The natural rock bridge, Tripia Petra, is the island’s trademark.

  3. Banana Beach: Split into “Big” and “Little” Banana, these beaches are the hub for younger crowds, offering water sports and famous beach bars.

  4. Agia Eleni: The best spot on the island to watch the sunset, offering a relaxed vibe and crystal-clear shallow waters.

Exploring the Region: Sporades, Volos, and Pelion

To truly understand the beauty of this corner of Greece, one must look at the mainland and the neighboring islands:

  • The Sporades Archipelago: While Skiathos is the liveliest, the nearby islands of Skopelos and Alonissos offer a different pace. Skopelos is famous for its green landscapes and “Mamma Mia” filming locations, while Alonissos is home to a National Marine Park, perfect for eco-tourism and spotting the Mediterranean monk seal.

  • Volos: This vibrant port city serves as the gateway to the Sporades. It is famous for its “Tsipouradika”—traditional eateries where you can enjoy local spirits accompanied by a vast array of fresh seafood meze. Volos combines a modern urban feel with a long history of maritime tradition.

  • Mount Pelion: Rising majestically above Volos, Pelion is known as the “Mountain of the Centaurs.” It is a place of myth and magic, featuring traditional stone-built villages like Makrinitsa and Portaria. Pelion is unique because it offers dense forests and hiking trails that lead directly to crystal-clear beaches, making it a year-round destination for both skiing in winter and swimming in summer.

Travel Tip

The best way to experience this region is to fly into Skiathos or take the ferry from Volos. This allows you to combine the sophisticated island life of the Sporades with the authentic, traditional charm of the Pelion peninsula.
